Jörg Armbruster, born in 1947, studied social sciences, political science, economics, theatre studies and linguistics. He began his journalistic career in 1973, initially in radio. After working for the radio stations WDR and SDR, Jörg Armbruster moved to SDR television in 1982.

From 1982 to 1986, Jörg Armbruster was a television reporter and presenter at the SDR studio in Mannheim. There he worked as an editor and travel correspondent in the foreign affairs department and took over as head of the foreign affairs department at SDR television from 1995 to 1998.

From 1999 to 2005, Jörg Armbruster was foreign correspondent and studio manager at the ARD office in Cairo, responsible for the Middle East. He then headed the Foreign Affairs/Europe department at SWR until 2010 and was part of the team of presenters on the ARD programme Weltspiegel. Jörg Armbruster took over as head of the ARD studio in Cairo again in 2010, remaining in the position until his retirement in December 2012. There he reported on the events of the Arab Spring. In 2011, he witnessed and commented live on the resignation of President Mubarak.

While researching and filming for the documentary ‘Between War and Peace – The New Middle East’, Jörg Armbruster was caught in a shootout and seriously injured.

In October 2013, Jörg Armbruster received the prestigious Hanns Joachim Friedrichs Prize for his journalistic work. In July 2013, he (together with Martin Durm) received the Leipzig Media Prize ‘Prize for the Freedom and Future of the Media’. In May 2015, Jörg Armbruster was awarded the Bavarian Television Prize's honorary award in recognition of his many years of reporting from crisis and war zones in the Middle East.
