Stefan D. Pauly

Rear Admiral (ret.), Senior Counsel, Head of the Board of Advisors, Eraneos (from 04/26)

Rear Admiral Stefan D. Pauly joined the German Navy in 1982. His career took him from the submarine squadron – including command of ‘U 25’ (1991–1993) and the 3rd Submarine Squadron (2002–2004) – to military intelligence and the Federal Intelligence Service. Among other things, he was Head of Strategic Reconnaissance at NATO Headquarters SACLANT in Norfolk and Lead Analyst for the Middle East and North Africa at the Federal Ministry of Defence.

With the rank of admiral, he headed the Intelligence Department at NATO Headquarters Joint Force Command Naples, was the first Chief of Staff of the newly established Allied Joint Force Command Norfolk, and from June 2022 commanded all NATO warships as Commander Surface Forces NATO in the Allied Maritime Command Northwood. Until the end of March 2026, he will head the Planning Department at the Bundeswehr Operational Command in Potsdam, where he will be responsible, among other things, for updating the ‘Operations Plan Germany’.

From April 2026, retired Admiral Pauly will make his many years of national and international experience available as Senior Counsel at Eraneos and as Senior Mentor for NATO academies and operational commands.
