Cardinal Reinhard Marx is Archbishop of Munich and Freising (Germany) andPresident of the Freisinger Bishop‘s Conference and Magnus Cancellarius of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt.
Cardinal Marx was born 1953 in Geseke (Germany). He studied theology and philosophy in Paderborn, Bochum and Paris and was ordained a priest 1979. Following his PhD thesis, he became Director of the “Kommende” in Dortmund and in 1996 Professor of Catholic Social Teaching at the Faculty of Theology in Paderborn.
1996 he was consecrated bishop and became Auxiliary Bishop of Paderborn. In 2001 he became Bishop of Trier; and since 2008 he has been the Archbishop of Munich and Freising.
Since March 2014 he is coordinator of the Vatican Council for the Economy. 2013-2023 Cardinal Marx was a member of Pope Francis’ Council of Cardinal Advisors.
2014-2019 Cardinal Marx has been President of the German Bishops’ Conference. Since 2006 Cardinal Marx has been a member of COMECE (Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community) and was President of COMECE from 2012 to 2018.
