Prof. Dr. h.c. Roland Berger is the founder and honorary chairman of the supervisory board of Munich-based strategy consultancy Roland Berger GmbH. He studied business administration in Munich and Hamburg.
Before founding his strategy consultancy in 1967, Roland Berger worked as a consultant, most recently as a partner, at one of the leading American consulting firms in Milan and Boston. The management consultancy he founded is now one of the world's leading strategy consultancies with 2,400 employees in 35 countries, advising international industrial and service companies as well as public institutions.
Roland Berger is a member of various supervisory and advisory boards of national and international companies, foundations and organisations, currently at Geox S.p.A., Biadene di Montebelluna and China Mensheng Investment, Shanghai. He is also active as an investor, including in numerous companies and start-ups.
Roland Berger was a lecturer in marketing and advertising at the Technical University of Munich and a visiting professor at the Brandenburg University of Technology in Cottbus, where he has held an honorary professorship in business administration and management consulting since 2009. He is Chairman of the Board of the Society for the Promotion of Economic Research (Friends of the ifo Institute) and a member of the Advisory Board of the European business school INSEAD in Fontainebleau (France) and Bocconi University in Milan.
As a member of numerous expert groups, he has advised various governments. In addition to many German state and federal governments, he has also served on the Globalisation Council Portugal and the High Level Group on Administrative Burdens of the European Commission.
Roland Berger was Honorary Consul General of the Republic of Finland in the Free States of Bavaria and Thuringia from 1996 to 2015 and has been Honorary Consul General of the Republic of Singapore in Bavaria since 2015.
In 2008, he founded the Roland Berger Foundation and is Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The foundation is committed to the worldwide protection of human dignity. As part of the German School Scholarship Programme, the foundation supports talented, committed and eager-to-learn children and young people who have had a difficult start in life.
Roland Berger has been honoured with numerous awards from Germany and abroad. These include the Federal Cross of Merit First Class, the Bavarian Order of Merit, the Prize for Understanding and Tolerance from the Jewish Museum Berlin, the Medal for Special Services to Bavaria in a United Europe, the Grand Silver Medal of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria and the Grand Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
